0098 The Earth - Continents

private swap

In Europe and other parts of the world, many students are taught of six continents, where North and South America are combined to form a single continent of America. Thus, these six continents are Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
Many scientists now refer to six continents, where Europe and Asia are combined (since they're one solid geologic landmass) as Eurasia. Thus, these six continents are Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Eurasia, North America, and South America.
Geographers divide the planet into regions, and generally not continents, for ease of study. Various geographers have various definitions of these world regions. This Official Listing of Countries by Region divides the world into eight regions: Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, North America, Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Australia and Oceania. 0097 Europe - 3D card

Postcrossing

Europe is a fascinating continent with a rich history and varied climate and culture.
According to scholars, this continent received it's name from a beautiful Phoenician princess in Greek mythology, Europa. Zeus, the King of the gods, saw her as she was gathering flowers by the sea and immediately fell in love with her. She was abducted by Zeus, who disguised himself as a magnificent white bull, and appeared on the sea shore, where the princess was playing.

Private swap

Fraser Island off the Queensland coast is Australia’s fifth largest island but the World’s largest sand island. Scientists believe Fraser Island has developed over a period of approximately 800,000 years. It's sand comes from the tablelands of northern New South Wales, washed into the sea by the big rivers of that area, and strong sea currents carry it north. Fraser Island was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770. But the Island was named after Eliza Fraser who was shipwrecked there in 1836. (info)
