Koli (67 km to the North from Joensuu) in northern Karelia is Finland’s most well-known national landscape. Imagine the blue (white in winter) of Lake Pielisjärvi, speckled with its many islands and the rocky summit of the Ukko-Koli Mountain soaring above you. The lakes are used for swimming and fishing in, for drinking water and even as roads in the winter when they are frozen over. As well as being the land of a thousand lakes Finland is comonly called the land of the midnight sun. And for good reason. During the months of June and July the sun shines all day and all night in the north, not dropping below the horizon at all!!!

Финляндия. В `95 году наша спортивная команда Калининская спорт. школа г. Санкт-Петербурга по баскетболу отправилась в Финляндию на соревнования. Для меня это было нечто – мой первый загран паспорт, таможня, валюта, потрясный язык, в котором почти нет предлогов, с множеством двойных гласных и длиннейшими словами, магазины, сервис, спортивный зал....короче глаза на орбите :).  Это наверное трудно представить или даже смешно, но эта маленькая страна на северной границе с Россией полностью изменила в свое время мои представления о мире и дала мне новые ориентиры в жизни.
