Ston is a village and municipality in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia, located at the south of isthmus of the Pelješac peninsula.
The best time to visit Ston is during the annual salt harvest
which takes place every July and August. Salt production has been an
economic mainstay since the Middle Ages and the saltworks of Ston are
among the oldest and best-preserved in Europe. The salt is still
harvested by hand and then loaded onto wagons for distribution.
Ston is the town with second largest stone wall!!!
The wall was build from the towns of Ston to Mali Ston. The 5.5 kilometer long wall that links these two small communities was completed in the 15th century, along with its 40 towers and 5 fortresses. It was meant as a second line of defense for the city of Dubrovnik and to protected the precious salt pans that contributed to Dubrovnik’s wealth.
